Albarino and Syrah among the trophy winners at the 2016 Marlborough Wine Show

A record number of wines were entered into the sixth annual Marlborough Wine Show, heldat the beginning of October. With 549 wines judged and 53 gold medals awarded, the scene was set for a big night at the celebration dinner held in Marlborough last night. Seventeen trophies were awarded as well as the Marlborough Museum Legacy Award.

Chief Judge, Oliver Masters said, “The 2016 Sauvignon Blancs were a real highlight, but we saw many great wines following a number of good vintages.” He continued, “With a high percentage of wines being awarded a gold medal, 10% compared to the usual average of about 6%, we saw some really top-class wines.”

Guest international judge, wine writer Ralph Kyte-Powell of Melbourne agreed saying,“Marlborough continues to impress with its unique style of Sauvignon Blanc, but there are many other great wine styles equally befitting of the world stage.”

The Marlborough Wine Show provides a platform for New Zealand’s biggest wine region to bench-mark and showcase its wines. Director, Belinda Jackson commented, “Marlborough is more than just Sauvignon Blanc – it’s about style diversity and it’s about our other varietals.” She said, “Sub-region and winemaker influence all play a part, whether it’s Sauvignon Blanc,

Pinot Noir, Riesling or Chardonnay. And we had a fantastic Albarino this year as well as Syrah.”
